Katsidis Challenges Juan Diaz, The Baby Bull Accepts
Posted by: Mark Vester on 02-07-2010.
www.boxingscene.com

WBO interim lightweight champion Michael Katsidis has challenged Juan Diaz to a rematch on March 27. While Katsidis has reached an agreement to fight Robert Guerrero on the HBO televised date, he appears to be willing to drop that fight in order to rematch Diaz. Katsidis lost to Diaz by way of a split-decision in 2008.

"I propose to come to Houston on March 27 and put everything I have gained on the line," Katsidis said. "Juan, this is your opportunity and I ask for a public response within the next 24 hours to show your willingness to accept this challenge."

Diaz's manager Willie Savannah has officially accepted the fight but it's not likely that HBO will be interested in this fight. They have their mind set on Katsidis fighting Guerrero and Marcos Maidana fights Victor Cayo in the co-feature of that card. They would likely drop Katsidis off the card if he withdraws from fighting Guerrero.

"Juan Diaz responds to Micheal Kadsidis challenge! Juan Baby Bull Diaz will gladly accept the challenge of Micheal Kadsidis for a rematch! Diaz has been impressed with Kadsidis last couple of performances and feels like this would be a great fight! Let's do it! Make it happen! - Savannah said.

Juan Diaz Talks Katsidis Rematch, Facing Edwin Valero
Posted by: Ryan Burton on 02-09-2010.
www.boxingscene.com

Former lightweight champion Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz responds to the challenge issued by Michael Katsidis in this exclusive BoxingScene.com interview. The Baby Bull also talks about Edwin Valero's victory over Antonio DeMarco and the possibility of unifying titles with him down the road.

BoxingScene.com:  What's the latest with Juan Diaz?

Juan Diaz:  I am getting back into the rhythm here in 2010. Its been a slow start to this year but I think that something great is going to happen in 2010. I have been taking this time off to refocus and get my mind right and get back to what I used to do.

BoxingScene.com: I see Michael Katsidis recently appeared here on BoxingScene.com wanting a rematch with you.  What are your thoughts on that?

Juan Diaz:  My manager (Willie Savannah) told me about this morning and I would love the rematch. I beat him the first time and I think this time a fight with Katsidis would prove to myself and the whole world that I am not done yet. I think Katsidis would be a great fight to prove I am still around and to showcase what I have in store for
2010.

BoxingScene.com:  Plus with Marquez likely moving up to 140 it probably would be for his belt as well.

Juan Diaz:  That would be icing on the cake because a lot of people are doubting me right now and by me stepping in the ring and beating Katsidis I think that everybody will keep their eye on me the rest of 2010.

BoxingScene.com:  Last time we talked you said you preferred not to fight in Houston because people will think you are getting preferential treatment from the judges because of the fight with Malignaggi. Katsidis said he would come to Houston. What are your thoughts on that?

Juan Diaz:  It honestly wouldn't be my first choice to fight in Houston but if the fight is in Houston so be it. The last few times I fought here I packed the house and I think the fans here in Houston would love it.  If its up to me I would much rather do it somewhere else but where ever it falls I am ready to do it.

BoxingScene.com:  Did you catch the Valero DeMarco fight on Saturday?

Juan Diaz:  Yes I sure did.  Valero showed a lot of determination and skills, especially after he got cut. I think he really is improving as a boxer. The cut was nasty but his corner was able to control it pretty well and you have to give them props for that.

BoxingScene.com:  Would you be interested in fighting him down the road?

Juan Diaz:  Down the line definitely. I am moving back down to lightweight because I feel I am much stronger in this weight division. Whoever they put in front of me I am going to fight and beat. By Katsidis challenging me I think that he can be my first test. I am going to make an example of him that I am a force to be reckoned with
in the lightweight division.

BoxingScene.com:  Do you have a target date for your return to the ring?

Juan Diaz:  At this point I haven't heard anything from De la Hoya or my manager so I am just staying in shape so if something comes about I am ready to do it.

BoxingScene.com:  Do you have a message for the fans?

Juan Diaz:  I want the fans to know I am not done by any means. I am far from done. Look out for me this year because I plan on becoming the lightweight champion of the world. The only lightweight champion. It doesn't matter who steps in my way. I am going through him so be ready.

Katsidis vs. Diaz II; And a Statement from Michael Katsidis
www.eastsideboxing.com

By John G. Thompson - For those who have not already heard, the excellent March 27th match-up of Michael Katsidis vs. Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero has been cancelled do to the health issues of Robert’s wife, Casey, who is fighting her own battle with leukemia. Certainly no one can fault Guerrero for pulling out, and we all wish Casey well. So who does Katsidis fight instead? It is clear there is one fight which interests Katsidis, and that is a rematch with one of the only two men to have beaten him. Here is a statement from Michael Katsidis:

“I think it is number one priority that I gladly can announce that Juan Diaz has officially accepted my challenge with an immediate public response. Already this shows his willingness to what will be another exciting battle. I know this fight will be at his weight division of which he was formerly crowned the lightweight king of the world. Now I am champion and I am prepared to put my belt on the line against the very best, and at this weight Diaz is assured to be all that is expected. I want to make a firm point to the boxing public. I have held back the truth to my demise in our last fight having suffered a broken hand in the second round of our last fight. Let it be known I will come forward, I will deliver and just as I have regained my title I will dominate all that I fight as now I am far more hardened and experienced then ever before in my career. I mean this with the most humble intentions but making sure to allow prior notice so all can witness the turning point I have worked so hard for..”

“To demonstrate my willingness to make this fight, Team Katsidis offered to enter the back yard of Diaz in Houston in order for him to accept this fight. Many have doubted the decisions handed over in the past. Yet, I remain silent. My time will come and with good faith I will not leave the decision of this fight in the hands of one judge.”

“My deepest sympathies to the Guerrero Family and I hope and pray everything will be okay for them.”

While the fight has not yet been made official, Juan Diaz did in fact comment on another website, “I would love a rematch. I beat him the first time and I think this time a fight with Katsidis would prove [to] myself and the whole world that I am not done yet.”

Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz 35-3 (17 KO’s) defeated Michael Katsidis 26-2 (21 KO’s) back in 2008, in Diaz’s hometown of Houston, Texas. As Paulie Malignaggi can attest to, it is difficult to win a decision in Houston, especially against crowd favorite Juan Diaz. Now the same opportunity for redemption granted to Paulie presents itself to Katsidis and it appears as though the Katsidis camp has chosen to fight again in the Baby Bull’s home town.

Katsidis obviously knows he must either dominate or knock out Diaz to win in Houston. If what he said about breaking his hand in the second round of their first fight is true, it seems likely that Katsidis will fair better in the rematch, the first fight having been so close. Size will not be a factor, even though Diaz is moving down in weight. Katsidis has an inch in height and Diaz possesses an inch in reach. Diaz has fought a better level of opposition, with wins against Acelino Freitas, Julio Diaz, and Paulie Malignaggi; and his only losses to a respectable group in Juan Manuel Marquez, Nate Campbell, and Paulie Malignaggi. Twenty-one of Katsidis’s fights have been in Australia, and the best names on his resume are Juan Diaz and Joel Casamayor (whom he lost to in an extraordinarily dramatic fight which saw Casamayor knocked out of the ring, before climbing back in to stop Katsidis).

Katsidis has not lost since he last met Diaz in the ring. Diaz is coming off two losses and two close decisions, and looking to rebound in spectacular fashion in order to preserve his career. The first fight between them was highly entertaining with both men fighting on the inside and constant back and forth action. Whoever wins it is hard to see this being anything short of a fan-friendly rematch on March 27th. In fact, it is hard to see this fight going the distance.
